The 5-Second Rule
When it helps
This method supports you in the moment when you already know what needs to be done, but are still hesitating. It helps you gently interrupt rumination before excuses arise. The goal is a conscious transition from thinking to acting – without pressure, just through a small mental nudge.
How to practice
- Recognize the moment: Imagine your alarm goes off or an unpleasant task is waiting. Take a brief moment to check in with yourself: Do you notice the hesitation? That's your cue.
- Count inwardly: Count calmly backward: 5 – 4 – 3 – 2 – 1.
- Get moving: Right after 1, take a small physical action. Stand up, open the file, or put on your shoes. Any movement, no matter how small, counts.
- Simply begin: Allow yourself to start right away, without re-evaluating your intention or negotiating with yourself. This lets you bypass inner resistance before it gets loud.
- Your impulse for today: Which one thing have you already decided on today but haven't started yet? Try it now: 5 – 4 – 3 – 2 – 1 ... and go.
Note: This rule is not a tool for force. It serves to make it easier to act on decisions you've already made. It helps you honor your own intentions – with care, but with determination.
