The 2-Minute Rule
When it helps
When many small tasks (emails, tidying, calls) weigh on you and clog your mind because you keep putting them off. This method creates immediate mental space through direct action.
How to practice
- Check: As soon as a small task comes up, ask yourself: 'Will this take less than two minutes to complete?'
- Do it now: If the answer is yes – do it immediately. Don't write it down, don't deliberate – just get it done.
- Close it out: Feel the small satisfaction of having it off your plate.
- Your impulse for today: What 2-minute task is right in front of you? Complete it now, before you read on.
Note: The burden of 'thinking about it' is often greater than the burden of actually doing it. The 2-minute rule protects you from mental overload.
