Recognizing ego impulses

Self-Leadership & Mindset 10-20 min.

When it helps

When you notice you react automatically in certain moments – such as immediately defending yourself, comparing yourself to others, or desperately needing to be right – this method helps you recognize these impulses early, before they determine your actions. It's not about fighting the ego, but consciously perceiving it. As soon as you see it, you win back the freedom to choose deliberately.

How to practice

  1. Understand the mechanism: Whether during criticism, an argument, or when comparing yourself to others – often an inner protective mechanism takes the wheel. Recognize these moments as a chance to pause briefly instead of reacting immediately.
  2. Under resistance (criticism): When you feel attacked, observe your first impulse. Ask yourself gently: Am I responding to the matter – or to my need for recognition? Try to see the other person's perspective as information, rather than as an attack on your worth.
  3. Under affirmation (praise): Enjoy recognition, but also use the moment for genuine gratitude. Briefly recall the people or circumstances that helped make this success possible. This makes you spacious and independent inwardly.
  4. In conflict: When you notice 'being right' is becoming more important than finding a solution – pause briefly. Breathe through it and ask: What serves the connection better in this moment? Try to truly understand the other person's standpoint before asserting your own.
  5. In comparison: When the urge arises to outdo others or make yourself small – practice presence. Listen actively and give your counterpart your full attention. Your presence is often more valuable than any self-promotion.
  6. Your impulse for today: In which of these situations do you react most 'automatically'? Choose that area for today and observe entirely without judgment what happens when that impulse comes knocking next time.

Note: Your ego is a part of you that wants to protect you. You don't need to get rid of it – you can learn to meet it with a smile. Awareness is the light that gently dissolves automatic reactions.
