Clearing Your Focus Space
When it helps
When your environment (physical or digital) is so cluttered that you can't concentrate. This method uses the outer space to create inner order.
How to practice
- Scan your surroundings: What in your direct field of vision is distracting you right now? (Clutter, open tabs, notifications.)
- Radically reduce: For 2 minutes, clear everything from your field of view that isn't necessary for the current task. Close all tabs except one.
- Breathe in the clarity: Notice the brief quiet in the outer space. Feel how your brain has fewer things to process.
- Start: Begin your task in this cleared space.
- Your impulse for today: Close all browser tabs right now that you meant to read 'at some point'. If it's important, you'll find it again.
Note: Your brain responds to visual stimuli. A clear space signals to your mind: 'Here you are allowed to focus.'
